چکیده

Our patient was diagnosed with unilateral familial retinoblastoma at the age of thirteen days. Nineteen months later magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain showed a suspicious cystic pineal gland. On a follow-up MR scan after another nine months this lesion was diagnosed as pineoblastoma. The tumor was resected and subsequently highdose chemotherapy was given, concluded with autologous stem-cell rescue. The patient was doing well at the last follow-up (over 5 years after resection). This case emphasizes that if there is any suspicious finding concerning the pineal gland on brain MR images in retinoblastoma patients, follow-up scans are highly recommended.

Magnetic resonance imaging based morphologic evaluation of the pineal gland for suspected pineoblastoma in retinoblastoma patients and age-matched controls

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphologic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of the pineal gland in retinoblastoma (Rb) patients without and with pineoblastoma in comparison to age-matched controls to improve early identification of pineoblastomas (trilateral retinoblastoma, TRb). METHODS AND MATERIALS 80 patients with retinoblastoma and 80 age-matched co...

Brain abnormalities on MR imaging in patients with retinoblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although pineoblastoma is the main brain abnormality associated with hereditary retinoblastoma, recent studies suggest an association with pineal cysts. This association is important because some pineoblastomas mimic pineal cysts. If there is a relationship, then radiologists should be aware of it because diagnostic confusion is possible. Mental retardation and congenital...

Pineal malignant neoplasm in association with hereditary retinoblastoma.

A patient with unilateral hereditary retinoblastoma who was successfully treated at the age of 7 weeks developed a tumour in the pineal region two and a half years later. The initial response to radiation treatment of the latter lesion was not maintained. Subsequent necropsy findings are described. Clinically and pathologically this case represents an example of the recently described trilatera...

Chromosomal abnormalities in a pineocytoma.

Tumors of the pineal region represent about 0.4-1% of intracranial neoplasms, including those tumors of germ cell origin (primarily germinomas and teratomas, which represent about 80% of pineal malignancies), and those tumors of the pineal parenchyma (pineocytoma and pineoblastoma). Pineocytoma is composed of relatively mature cells of the pineal parenchyma, whereas pineoblastoma represents a m...

[Trilateral retinoblastoma. Correlation between the genetic anomalies of the RB1 gene and the presence of pineal gland cysts].

OBJETIVE To determine the correlation between the presence of genetic anomalies identified in the RB1 gene and the development of trilateral retinoblastoma. METHOD No patients with primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET) were identified out of a total of 206 patients, but there were 17 cases of pineal cysts, of which 11 had a genetic study. RESULTS Of the 11 patients who had a genetic study...
